Hoyt H. Bohannon, a well-known trombone player and studio musician, has died in a North Hollywood convalescent home. He was 72.

A longtime resident of North Hollywood, Bohannon died of heart failure.

Born May 22, 1918, in Daytona Beach, Fla., Bohannon came to California as a child. He spent a few years touring the country with the Harry James orchestra. In 1941, he entered the Army Air Corps, where he played for the Air Corps orchestra.

After his discharge, he played with Paul Whiteman and his orchestra and as a studio musician for Warner Bros. He later worked as a free-lance musician, playing for television shows, various recordings and symphonies, including the Glendale Symphony during the 1960s and 1970s.

For the past 40 years, Bohannon’s studio at his North Hollywood home, dubbed “Hoyt’s Garage,” has been the weekly meeting place for trombonists who played music from Bohannon’s extensive collection of arrangements.
