Criss heard Dixieland music when he was about 20 years old at the old Shakey's pizza parlor in Birmingham, Alabama.
He went there every Saturday night to listen to the band play and decided that he wanted to learn to play the trombone.

A few of the old-time trombone players from Birmingham, Cy Rappe and Lee Jones as well as the local Birmingham great
trumpet player, Chuck King, gave be a few pointers but for the most part he is self-taught on trombone and trumpet.

Criss plays a King trombone and is using the Schilke 47 and a Rudy Muck mouthpiece and enjoys playing Dixieland jazz and blues.

Criss now lives in Panama City Beach, Florida.
